The City of Abbotsford is located off the Trans-Canada Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, 75 km (47 miles) east of Vancouver and 7 km (4.5 miles) north of the Canada/United States border. The city is bordered by Langley to the west, the Fraser River and Mission to the north, Chilliwack to the east, and the Canada-US border to the south. The dramatic views of Mount Baker to the southeast and the Coast Mountains to the north lend the city its quiet pastoral scenery and refreshing country feel.
Abbotsford is the largest municipality by area in British Columbia and is home to 123,864 people based on a 2006 census. The city is a 40 minute travel from Metro Vancouver. For transportation, various commercial and charter bus lines are available. Also, there is an international airport in Abbotsford.
The city’s main industries aside from agriculture include dairy/beef farming, flower growing, tourism, manufacturing, processing, constructions, trades and service. The municipality’s rich soil and ideal climate makes the area suitable for flower growing and yes – raspberries! Thus, the title – the Raspberry Capital of Canada.
The area has a summer average temperature of 20 C. In winter, the temperature drops only to an average temperature of above 0 C. The comfortable west coast climate makes Abbotsford an ideal place for outdoor activities from skiing to white water rafting, fishing, horseback riding, hang gliding, boating, biking and hiking.
Abbotsford is home to the University of the Fraser Valley, the Abbotsford International Airport which hosts the Abbotsford International Airshow every August and the Jane and Gerry Swan Track at Rotary Stadium. The Balley Royals Track and Field Club of the stadium boasts numerous Olympians including two who competed at the 2008 Olympics.
